Cyber Security: Why is Social Engineering so Effective?

Hi everyone, welcome back. Cyber Security is a hot topic and an important area of focus for multiple reasons. The big reason is that sensitive data is stored electronically allowing for it to become more accessible and could potentially cause damage to someone or even an entire company. Social Engineering

Social engineering is a method in which someone, a social engineer, gather information over time by asking questions that seem unimportant and/or seem like small talk. Overtime, the social engineer will gain trust and gain knowledge in an attempt to obtain sensitive information. Read more about social engineering and techniques here. Authority

After a social engineer with malicious intent gets familiar with the way a company communicates, they can make themselves appear to know what they’re talking about or have special knowledge about something. Understanding the company jargon, using other peoples names, and having knowledge of systems and applications can make a social engineer seem like they belong.
